                                            Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 2. Samsung has announced the follow-up to its 7-inch Galaxy Tab. Dubbed the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) , the 7-inch  tablet  sports  Android  4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and a 1GHz dual-core processor. The Galaxy Tab 2 will come with both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. On the software side, Samsung's upcoming tablet will ship with its Hub services, including Music Hub to access over 17 million tracks, and Readers Hub for acquiring e-books. The offering will also come with Video Hub, which Samsung says, will allow users to rent or buy over 1,000 films. The Galaxy Tab 2 will also become the first mobile device from Samsung to ship with its AllShare Play service. Microsoft has struck another key patent-licensing deal in the  Android ecosystem.                                                            The software company announced today that it has inked a deal with LG that will see it license operating system patents for devices running Android and Chrome OS. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. LG has been relying heavily upon Android for its mobile push. At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this week, the company showed off its new flagship device,  the LG Spectrum . Talk of Research In Motion being acquired  just won't go away. But this time, it might be RIM's fault.                         The BlackBerry maker has hired investment bank Goldman Sachs to help it field potential buyout offers, according to the rumor mill on the Wall Street trading floor.  According to Reuters , one unidentified trader said yesterday that RIM is "up on Goldman," but cautioned that it doesn't mean a sale is coming anytime soon. Even so, all that speculation was enough to see RIM's shares jump over 5 percent yesterday to settle at $16.44. For years, Nokia has led all handset vendors in unit shipments. But this year, Samsung believes it can change that.                                                                      Samsung handset sales are on the rise. The company's chief executive Choi Gee-sung  told Reuters in an interview in Las Vegas yesterday that he believes his company's total handset shipments this year will be higher than those of Nokia's. He didn't say how many handsets Samsung expects to sell this year, but pointed to his company's strong shipment growth to bolster his point. And what growth it has been. Sony had a strong showing during the busy holiday shopping season, the company announced last night.                            Between November 21 and January 5 in Japan and Asia, and November 21 and December 31 in North America, the company sold 6.5 million PlayStation  hardware units worldwide. That figure is made up of sales of the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 2. Sony's PlayStation 3 sales were especially strong, hitting 3.9 million units worldwide during the shopping season. Sony also announced that it sold 500,000 units of its new portable, the PlayStation Vita, across Japan and Asia. And although that device is replacing Sony's PSP, the company said that the last-generation portable was still able to reach 1.6 million unit sales during the shopping season.
